The goals of Mindfulness Training are to give all athletes(tennis, soccer, lacrosse, hockey, basketball, ect.) control of their anxiety levels and to maximize reaction speed, cognitive processing and focus.

Mindfulness Training is defined by Kabat-Zinn (2003) as the “the awareness that emerges through paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmental, to the unfolding of experience moment by moment.”

Mindfulness Training practices are, in some regard, the complete opposite of a few of the common cognitive behavior Barres. Mindfulness Training practices do not try to suppress negative thoughts and anxiety, but rather to bring athletes’ awareness to them without the accompanying judgment of the experience. Mindfulness Training practices teach players to accept these experiences and to avoid the internal fight that might occur while trying to suppress them.

“You have to train your MIND like you train your BODY”

Mindfulness Training teaches us how to remain in the moment and to stay focused and emotionally balanced during a highly stressful situation. Mindfulness teaches us how to manage emotion in the moment and move onto the next experience. Most people try to block out, ignore or suppress negative thoughts and emotions, which ultimately makes those thoughts and emotions intensify. Mindfulness Training allows us to bring our awareness to the negative thoughts without accompanying judgment of the experience.

Every emotion we feel is trying to tell us something. Fear, for example, can be useful in triggering a ‘fight or flight’ instinct which, if we allow it, can save our life in a dangerous situation. If we block it out and suppress it, it will take control over us completely. Being mindful of both emotions and thoughts is about allowing ourselves to be aware of them in real time, just as they are. This awareness is the very first thing that has to happen. From there, we learn how to, in a way, step back and observe our thoughts without judging them. Then finally is acceptance. Accepting how we feel in order to move on forward.
